FAQ

WHEN CAN I APPLY FOR THE OOKS LIFE TEAM?

If you are interested in working on the Ooks Life Team during the 2024-2025 school year, general applications will open in Fall 2023 and applicants will be contacted in January 2024. Make sure to follow @ookslife and @naitstudents on social media to find out when applications are open.

When do I start?

The earliest you might start your role on the Ooks Life Team can be March 1st. Your official start date depends on the availability of your team and your respective supervisor.

How much do I get paid and when?

Ooks Life Team students are paid $18 / hour. Direct deposit payments occur on the 15th and 30th of each month.

WHAT WILL MY SCHEDULE BE WHILE ON THE OOKS LIFE TEAM?

Setting your work schedule is primarily up to the Ooks Life Team member. Approx. 60% of the hours, you will work independently (at the NAITSA office or remotely), and the other 40% of your hours, you’ll assist the team with promotions, events, or other projects. An Ooks Life Team supervisor will post the shifts monthly, and you choose the ones that work best with your schedule, keeping in mind that you need to end your month between the minimum and maximum hours.

Will I have to work weekends?

Regularly, no! We host two Kids Party events on Saturdays during the fall and winter semesters, a welcome back party in January at the World Waterpark, and weekend trips/day trips to the mountains. The events calendar may include a few other weekend events, but you can pick up shifts depending on personal availability.

Is there a uniform I will need to wear?
Yes. When you are on a shift and working with the public/NAIT student body, you must wear your uniform. NAITSA provides the uniform.
What can I expect during a typical week?

During a typical week as an Ooks Life Team member, your week could involve a variety of things, including some of the following:

  • Planning out projects and initiatives
  • Working a shift in the Nest or hosting a hallway promotion
  • Helping to create content for social media (can someone say TikTok dance?!)
  • Attending meetings via video chat or at the NAITSA office
  • Preparing supplies for your project and events
  • Meeting with your team members virtually or in-person
  • Brainstorming creative ways to engage students
Are Ooks Life Team meetings mandatory?

Yes, the supervisors create the meeting schedule before incoming team members accept their positions. Each student is allowed to miss a maximum of two meetings over the year. Missing more than two meetings will terminate your position. The meetings will be scheduled on Tuesdays at 4:15 PM.

Do I need to be on campus during the day?

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we strongly recommended that students were on campus during daytime hours. However, moving forward, it is only necessary to be on campus when specified by your supervisor or as determined by NAIT and provincial health guidelines, or for an event shift you have picked up.

Can I participate if I will be working on a practicum in my second semester (i.e. Winter 2024)?

Students enrolled in a practicum in the second semester are not eligible for the Ooks Life Team. Most of the workload will be during the day, and we need our team to be active online or on-campus during both semesters.

What if I complete my education in December?

The Ooks Life Team term is from March 2023 – April 2024. You must be enrolled and present on campus both semesters, or you are ineligible for the position.

Can I have multiple student jobs at NAITSA?

You cannot hold student governance positions or Nugget positions while working with the Ooks Life Team.

Do you advise that I have additional jobs?

The workload with the Ooks Life Team and a full academic course load will be demanding. Our team recommends prioritizing a healthy school, work, and life balance by not working additional jobs.

Is attending the ‘Think Tank’ retreat mandatory?

Yes. Attending the retreat is a requirement for the job.

Is there manual labour involved with the positions?

Yes, you are required to be able to lift and move up to 25lbs. Often, events set up will include moving tables, chairs, hanging décor, using ladders, and similar activities.
